VIVIAN CHARPING

AUGUST 6, 1939 – AUGUST 26, 2011

TOWNVILLE, SC - Vivian Palmer Charping, age 72 of 101 Palmer Road, passed away on Friday, August 26, 2011 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Townville, SC on August 6, 1939, Mrs. Charping was the daughter of the late Frank C. Palmer and Sybil Day Palmer.  She was a graduate of Townville High School. Mrs. Charping had worked for number of years with Brendles Department Store before retiring from Phil’s Jewelers.  She was a member of the Dickson Memorial United Methodist Church where she was an active member of the Joy Sunday School Class and Prime Time Seniors. She was also a member of the Red Hatters.

Survivors include her children; Debra Sparacino and her husband, Tom of Clemson and Kimberly C. Keasler and her husband, Don of Pendleton and Stephen J. Charping and his wife, Denise of Starr and Jon Charping and his wife, Catherine of Anderson.  Six grandchildren, Nate Keasler, Alexa Sparacino, Kaitlyn Charping, Ashlyn Charping, Ashley Tormasi, and Travis Tormasi, sisters; Glenola Barth and her husband, Clyde of Anderson and Cornelia Caldwell and her husband, Kenny Marshall of Anderson.

In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Jerry Dewitt Charping, brother, Ricky Palmer, and sister, Dorothy Oakes.

The Funeral Service will be held on Monday, August 29, 2011 at 4:00 pm at Dickson Memorial United Methodist Church officiated by the Reverend Paul Cheezem.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Charping will be placed in the church at 3:00 pm on Monday.

The family will be at the residence of Pam & Dennis Robinson, 100 Palmer Road, Townville and will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

HELEN REDMOND

January 25, 1921 – August 25, 2011

ANDERSON, SC - Helen Elizabeth Bragg Redmond, age 90 of 102 Rhodehaven Drive, wife of the late Luther James Redmond, passed away on Thursday, August 25, 2011 at her residence.

Born in Millen, GA on January 25, 1921, Mrs. Redmond was a daughter of the late Ben Bragg and Willie Redd Bragg.  She was a homemaker and member of Midway Baptist Church in Georgia.  She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She is survived by her daughters, Shirley Washburn and Lynn Fuller; four grandchildren, Celeste Godwin, Keith Nunn, James Fuller and Helena Fuller Richards; six great-grandchildren, Tyler Nunn, Payton Nunn, Robert Richards, Jr., Hunter Nunn, Savannah Godwin and Talon Fuller, and one great-great-grandson, Kagan.  

A Graveside Service will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at 1:00 pm at New Dorchester Cemetery in Dorchester, GA.

WANDA PUTNAM

November 29, 1935 – August 26, 2011

ANDERSON, SC - Wanda Elaine Boggs Putnam, age 75 of 130 Victorian Drive, passed away on Friday, August 26, 2011 at the AnMed Health Medical Center. 

Born in Anderson, SC on November 29, 1935, Mrs. Putnam was the daughter of the late Lewis T. Boggs and Ruby Hilley Boggs.  She was a graduate of Girls’ High School and retired from Springs Industries after 36 years of service.  She was a member of Toxaway United Methodist Church. 

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Ted Putnam of the home; sons, Conrad Putnam and his wife, Patsy of Belton and Mark Putnam and his wife, Debbie of Anderson; three grandchildren, Kyle, Josh and Nick Putnam.

She was predeceased by a brother, Lewis T. Boggs, Jr. 

A Graveside Service will be held on Sunday, August 28, 2011 at 3:00 pm at New Silver Brook Cemetery officiated by Dr. Tony Smith. 

The family will be at the residence.

Doris Seigler

SENECA- Doris Sherrill Blume Seigler, 69, of Seneca died August 26, 2011 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born May 15, 1942 in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late Edward Murry "Mutt" and Frances Morgan Blume. She was a graduate of Girls High and Forrest College. She was a homemaker. 

Surviving are her husband, Ronald Seigler of the home, son, Mark Blackston and his wife, Michele and grandson, Joel Edward Blackston all of Simpsonville. She was preceded in death by a son Jeffrey Blackston, and brothers, Murry Dwain Blume and Ronnie T. Blume.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Sunday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, 3205 Hwy 81 North. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:30 PM prior to the service. Burial will be in New Silver Brook Cemetery.

EDNA S. HALL

October 23, 1928 – August 24, 2011

ANDERSON, SC - Edna Ruth Sanders Hall, age 82, wife of the late Harold Curtis Hall and formerly of Belton, passed away on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at NHC HealthCare in Anderson. 

Born in Pelzer, SC on October 23, 1928, Mrs. Hall was a daughter of the late William Ernest Sanders and Mattie Thompson Sanders.  She had worked at Gluck Mill for many years and was an avid gardener. Mrs. Hall was a member of Belton Second Baptist Church where she was member of the Ladies Sunday School Class and was the chairman of the Social Committee for many years. 

She is survived by several nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by brothers, William J. Sanders, Arnold Sanders and Kohn T. Sanders; sisters, Carolyn Sanders Foxworth and Carmon Catherine Sanders.  

The family will receive friends at the Belton Second Baptist Church on Friday, August 26, 2011 from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm with the Funeral Service following at 2:30 pm, officiated by Dr. Mitch Brooks.  Interment will follow in Garden of Memories in Belton.

ANDERSON, SC – Ruzzell Whitfield Brock, age 91, resident of NHC Healthcare, passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2011.

Born December 18, 1919, in Banks County, GA, she was a daughter of the late Haskell Kyle Whitfield and Mary Etta Mize Whitfield.  Mrs. Brock was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her children: Gary Brock (Janet) of Dalton, GA, Annette Powell (Ken) of Williamston, SC, and Janice Vermillion of Naples, FL; grandchildren: Barry Brock, Mark Vermillion, Chris Powell, Wendy Kelly, John Brock, Brad Powell, Matt Vermillion, and Kim Clements; ten great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.  She is also survived by her siblings: Leola Vaughn, Eunice Webb, Zelma Dodgens, Virginia Harbin, Nell Bailey, Mary Ruth Evans, Betty Baker, Billy Whitfield, Johnny Whitfield, Larry Whitfield, and Wade Whitfield.  In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by an infant brother, Oscar Whitfield; and a brother, Joe Whitfield.

The Funeral Service will be held at 4pm on Thursday, August 25, 2011, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by the Reverend Beryl Rosenberger. Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Betty Lou Grumbles

ANDERSON- Betty Lou Smith Grumbles, 81, of Fairmont Rd., widow of the late Horace J. Grumbles, died Thursday, August 25, 2011 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born August 30, 1929 in Piedmont, SC, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin and Beulah McClain Smith. She was a secretary for Burriss Animal Clinic for many years. Mrs. Grumbles was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church in Piedmont.

Surviving are her daughter, Susan Durell and husband, Randy of Anderson, sons, John B. Grumbles and wife, Kim of Anderson and Horace J. Grumbles, Jr. and wife, Beth of Easley, grandchildren, Elizabeth Sims Cashion and husband, Chris, Anna Katherine Stuart, Charles Benjamin Stuart and wife, Wendy, Sara Grumbles Crocker and husband, Brent, and Robert Grumbles, great grandchildren, Christopher Sims Cashion, Strother Elizabeth Cashion, Charles Braden Stuart, Sophie Leigh Stuart, Ava Grace Crocker and two sisters: Clara Phillips and Peggy Galloway. She was preceded in death by a sister, Margie Smith.

Graveside services will be held at 2 PM Saturday at Shiloh United Methodist Church, Piedmont with Pastor Perry Evatt officiating. MELVIN SMITH

DECEMBER 3, 1938 – AUGUST 22, 2011

ANDERSON, SC – Willis Melvin Smith, age 72, of Friendship Lane, went to be with the Lord on Monday, August 22, 2011, at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born December 3, 1938, in Anderson, SC, he was a son of the late Reverend W.B. Smith and Nora Gosnell Smith. He served in the United States Navy. Upon completion of Tri-County Technical College, he received a degree in Electronic Engineering. He retired from General Electric in Greenville. Mr. Smith was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Temple where he was a member of the Missions Team and was a graduate of the Savannah Valley Bible College.  Additionally, he was a member of Carpenters for Christ, Hejaz, the Hiram Masonic Lodge, the Starr-Iva Gideon’s Camp, and served at the rank of Chief for the Fire Brigade at General Electric.

Survivors include his wife, Wilda McCullough Smith, of the home; daughters: Marie Smith Schamens and husband, Thomas, and Myranda Smith Cantrell and husband, Jamie, all of Anderson, SC; grandchildren: Kendal-Marie Schamens, Ericson Smith Schamens, Mykala Cantrell, and McKane Cantrell; and sisters: Irene Martin of Haw River, NC, and Margaret Tollison of Anderson, SC.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by siblings: Buford, Roy, and William Smith, Pauline Paxton, Frances Medlin, Evelyn Gentry, and Lady McGuire.

The Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 pm on Thursday, August 25, 2011, at Gethsemane Baptist Temple conducted by the Reverend Sam Duncan and the Reverend Danny Driver.  Interment with Military Honors will follow in M.J. ‘Dolly’ Cooper Veterans Cemetery.

Born in Anderson, SC on February 20, 1975, Casey was a daughter of Danny Ray Erwin, Sr., of Conway, SC and Cynthia Dianne Murphy Erwin of Pendleton, SC. She attended Westside High School, was a homemaker and of the Baptist Faith.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Tony Morris; sons, Justin Miller, Jacob Morris and Ashton Morris; brother, Danny Ray Erwin, Jr., and his wife, Betty, all of Anderson; sisters-in-law, Trudi West of Pendleton and Carla Erwin of Anderson.

ANDERSON, SC – Malcolm Dwight “Curley” Whitfield, age 77, of 1109 West End Avenue, passed away on Friday, August 19, 2011, at Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home.

Born October 18, 1933, in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Alvin Whitfield and Vickie Vanadore Whitfield.  He served in the United States Army and was the retired owner of C&L Amusements.

Survivors include a daughter, Vicki Price and husband, Ron; son, Scott Whitfield and wife, Teri; sisters: Lucille Lundkovsky and Deborah Mitchell; brother, Walter Whitfield; grandchildren: George Ward, Casey Pinson (Rodney), Blake Whitfield, and Brooke Driver (Ed); great grandchildren: Jason Ward and Lilly Pinson; brother-in-law, Doyle Anderson and wife, Louise; sister-in-law, Viola Padgett.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Pauline Anderson Whitfield; and a sister, Dolly Ruth Guthrie

ANDERSON, SC – Richard Joe Monroe, age 55, of 100 Pine Needle Trail, passed away at his home.

Born March 24, 1956, in Anderson, SC, he was a son of Beth Clara Murphree Monroe Free and the late Joe Earl Monroe.  He was a graduate of Westside High School and Tri-County Technical College.   Mr. Monroe was a former automotive parts sales manager and member of West Anderson Church of God.

In addition to his mother, he  is survived by a brother, Danny Earl Monroe; a nephew, William Daniel Monroe; a niece, Sarah Elizabeth Monroe, all of Anderson, SC; and stepfather, Robert Free and family.

TOWNVILLE, SC – James Henry “Porky” Greene, age 42, of 200 Double Springs Road, passed away on Thursday, August 18, 2011, at his home.

Born January 20, 1969, in Oconee County, SC, he was a son of Robert Larry Greene and Ruby Brothers Atkins.  He was formerly a master plumber and was a member of Oakdale Baptist Church.

Survivors include his beloved family: wife, Lashanda Timms Greene; children: Zachary William Greene, Laycie Jade Greene, and James Hunner Greene, all of the home; mother and stepfather, Ruby and Toby Atkins; father, Robert Larry Greene, all of Townville, SC; sister, Lynn Donald of Townville, SC; stepbrother, Teddy Atkins of Pendleton, SC; half-sister, Brittney Greene of Florida.  He was predeceased by a brother, Robert L. Greene, Jr.

NOVEMBER 19, 1958 – AUGUST 15, 2011

ANDERSON, SC – Pamela Jean Whitfield, age 52, of 203 Williford Road, passed away on Monday, August 15, 2011, at the AnMed Health Medical Center. 

Born November 19, 1958, in New Bedford, MA, she was a daughter of Barbara Price Nichols and the late Edward Nichols. Mrs. Whitfield was a graduate of Baptist College in Charleston, SC, and was employed in the Accounting Department at Wal-Mart.  An avid soloist, in earlier years she was instrumental in singing in the “Maranatha” Group.  She was a member of Eureka Baptist Church where she was also member of the Church Choir. 

In addition to her mother, she is survived by husband, Gerald W. Whitfield, of the home; sisters: Linda Reece of Commerce, GA, Joanne Franks of Anderson, SC, Carolyn Weekley of Lilburn, GA, and Marcy Moore of Simpsonville, SC; brother, Wayne Nichols of Linden, NC; and many beloved nieces and nephews. 

The Funeral Service will be held at 2pm on Thursday, August 18, 2011, at Eureka Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Ron Fousek and the Reverend Danny Gray. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.  The family is at the home and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home from 7pm until 9pm on Wednesday.

RUTH PITTS WELCH

May 25, 1917 – August 13, 2011 

Ruth Adele Pitts Welch, age 94, widow of the late Mitchell Beverly Welch, died August 13, 2011 at Rainey Hospice House in Anderson, SC.  

Born May 25, 1917, in Newberry, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late James Wister Pitts and the late Cora Grizzard Pitts.

Mrs. Welch attended public schools in Silverstreet and  Newberry, South Carolina.  She was graduated cum laude from Newberry College with a B. A.  Degree and was graduated cum laude from the University of South Carolina with a Master’s Degree in Education.  For thirty-six years, she taught in elementary schools through-out South Carolina.  She was a life-long member of various Methodist churches wherever she lived.  Most recently, she was a member of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church and a member of the Ruth Diggs Circle.

She is survived by her two nieces and a nephew, two great nieces and two great nephews, three great-great nieces, and three great- great nephews and many cousins.   She is also survived by her late husband’s family, her many friends, and compassionate nurses and caregivers.

In addition to her parents and beloved husband, Mrs. Welch was predeceased by sisters, Pearl Eoline Pitts, Sara Mae Pitts Lindler, Vera Elizabeth Pitts, Clara Pitts and an infant baby sister;  also a brother, James Jefferson Pitts, Sr.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am, August 17, 2011 at Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery in Newberry, SC, officiated by her nephew, The Rev.  James J. Pitts, Jr.

ANDERSON, SC – Mrs. Lillie Frances Smith Driver Medlin, age 81, of 434 Hillside Drive, Anderson, SC , died Friday August 12, 2011 at the AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Anderson County, SC on March 17, 1930, she was a daughter of the late Reverend W.B. Smith and Nora Gosnell Smith. She was a graduate of BTI, and was a member of the Belmont Church of God of Prophecy, where she was a Mission Leader for many years.

Survivors include her children; Butch Driver of Starr, SC , Danny Driver and his wife, Peggy of Clinton, SC ; Tony Driver, Scott Medlin, and Pam Medlin all of Anderson; brother, Melvin Smith, of Anderson, SC; sisters; Irene Martin of Hall River, NC., and Margaret Tollison of Anderson, SC., twelve grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren, one great great –grandchild. 

In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her first husband, Clyde David Driver, son, Chip Medlin , daughter, Dian Fowler, brothers; Buford Smith, and Roy Smith, and William Smith,  sisters; Pauline Paxton, Evelyn Gentry, and Lady McGuire. 

The Funeral Service will be held on Monday , August 15, 2011 at 1:00 pm at the Belmont Church of God of Prophecy officiated by Reverends: Danny Driver, Alan Rhodes, and Scott Neal.  Interment will follow in the New Silver Brook Cemetery.

SARA STORY

September 28, 1912 – August 12, 2011 

ANDERSON, SC - Sara Elizabeth Brooks Story, age 98, of Anderson, wife of the late Lonnie Story, died Friday, August 12, 2011 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Anderson County, SC on September 28, 1912, Mrs. Story was a daughter of the late Truman Brooks and Wynona Drake Brooks.  She retired as a seamstress with 

Bobby Dan Manufacturing Company.  She was a member of Toxaway United Methodist Church, where she was a former Sunday School Class teacher as long as her health permitted.  She was an avid quilter. 

Survivors include her children; Anita Deanhardt and her husband, Michael; Truman Story and his wife, Jean, all of Anderson and Selma Garrison and her husband, Paul of Taylors, SC; sister, Laura Kimbo of Anderson; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.  

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Herman, Leslie, Aaron and Benson Brooks and sisters, Selma Jones, Faye Chandler, Margaret Williams and Linna Lalleron.

The Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, August 14, 2011 at 3:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by the Reverend Kurt Stutler.  Interment will follow in Union Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will be at the home of her son, Truman, 1900 Sheldon Drive, Anderson, SC and will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 1:30 pm until 2:30 pm.

SCOTTY WOOD

December 30, 1963 – August 9, 2011

Iva, SC - Scotty Dwayne Wood, age 47, of 402 Johnny Long Road, passed away following a lengthy illness on Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at his residence.

Born in Anderson, SC on December 30, 1963, Scotty was the son of the late Lillie Mae Hester Wood.  He was a former employee of Jackson Mill, Hartwell Plastics and Wal-Mart. 

Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Dana Burdette Wood; children, Britney Wood and Louis Wood, all of the home; sister, Diane Vickery of Hartwell, GA and Debbie King of Belton, SC; one nephew and two nieces. 

He was predeceased by his grandmother, Dessie Shaw Chastain. 

The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, August 12, 2011 at 4:00 pm in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by the Reverend Charles Howell, Jr.  Interment will follow in Iva City Cemetery. 

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 2:00 pm until 3:30 pm.

JAMES E. DEATON, SR.

February 22, 1922 – August 9, 2011  

ANDERSON, SC - James Ernest Deaton, Sr., age 89 of Anderson, husband of the late Maybelle Ramey Deaton, died Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at the Rainey Hospice House. 

Born in Oconee County, SC on February 22, 1922, Mr. Deaton was a son of the late Charles Quinton Deaton and Lalah Phillips Deaton.  He was a United States Army World War II veteran.  Mr. Deaton was a carpenter for many years and was the co- owner of Deaton & Son Construction Company.  He was a former member of the Anderson County Home Builders Association and was a member of Belmont Church of God of Prophecy 

Survivors include his sons, James E. Deaton, Jr., and his wife, Barbara, Marshall E. Deaton and his wife, Debbie, Kenneth R. Deaton and his wife, Gail, all of Anderson; brother, Joel Deaton of Westminster; sisters, Nellie Thomas of Winder, GA, Mildred Burrell and Evangeline Crowe, both of Salem, SC and Ester Jackson of Pendleton, SC; seven grandchildren, James Deaton, III, Jason Deaton, Brent Deaton, Kimberly Deaton, Melissa Deaton, Justin Deaton and Dustin Deaton and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Verner and Alton Ray Deaton and a sister, Beulah Hamrick. 

The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, August 12, 2011 at 2:00  pm in the Chapel of The McDougald  Funeral Home officiated by the Reverends, Allen Rhodes, Jerry Nation, and Rodney Harbin.  Grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers.  Interment with Military Honors will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. 

The family will be at the home of his son, Marshall Deaton, 129 Roberts Church Road, Anderson, SC and will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 12:30 pm until 1:30 pm.

DICK ASMUSSEN

DECEMBER 28, 1932 – AUGUST 6, 2011 

ANDERSON, SC – Richard Donald “Dick” Asmussen, age 78, resident of 1201 Melbourne Drive, passed away on Saturday, August 6, 2011, at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born December 28, 1932, in Clinton, Iowa, to the late Maynard Asmussen and Margaret Seifert Asmussen, he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business from Limestone College. He was a Consumer Loan Supervisor, a tax consultant for H&R Block, taught History at the Anderson County Alternative School, served as a Patient Advocate at AnMed, an Arbitrator for the Anderson County Juvenile Justice Program, and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.  Dick was an avid reader and writer; many family members and dear friends will miss his lengthy letters and emails expressing his wishes, concerns, and opinions.  He also authored a book about the SC statesman John C. Calhoun, who he held in high regard.  An avid sports fan, Dick enjoyed professional and college sports of all kind.  Dick was very interested in genealogy and his family is grateful for his efforts in researching the Asmussen family tree.  He helped his loving family and his kind, gentle, and wise demeanor allowed him to help everyone he met.  He loved his relationship with God, studying his Bible, attending Sunday services at Trinity UMC, and evening services at NewSpring.  He helped teach the Cokesbury Sunday School Class at Trinity UMC. He was willing to share his wisdom.   Dick was a charter member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he helped start the ‘Touch of Love Program’, a church program specializing in the needs of underprivileged children. 

Survivors include his wife, Margaret S. “Marge” Asmussen; children: Lynn A. Kay and husband, Steve Kay, Cathy A. Leonard and husband, Luke Leonard, Susan A. Davenport, and Tammy A. Wilson and husband, Eddie Wilson, all of Anderson, SC; brother, Kenneth Asmussen of IL; grandchildren: Sunny Davis, Farrah Moore, Patrick Kay, Courtney Wilson, and Kyle Wilson; and great-grandchildren: Caitlin Moore, Bradley Moore, Rudy Davis, Rush Davis, and Hayden Deas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Allison Dana Kay.

A Memorial Service will be held at 3pm on Saturday, August 20, 2011, at Trinity United Methodist Church conducted by the Reverend Paul Frey, the Reverend Mike Vandiver, and the Reverend Andy Bullions.  Music will be provided by the Reverend Kurt Stutler. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorials be made to Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 285, Anderson, SC 29622, or to the Habitat House Fund of Trinity United Methodist Church, 1809 North Main Street, Anderson, SC 29621.
