VIRGINIA G. GRAY, R.N.
JANUARY 24, 1919 – SEPTEMBER 25, 2009
ANDERSON, SC – Virginia “Gin” Gideon Gray, age 90, resident of Anderson, SC, and formerly of Greenville, SC, passed away on September 25, 2009. Born on January 24, 1919, in Logmont, KY, she was the daughter of the late Houk and Beulah Gibson Gideon. After growing up and attending high school in Knoxville, TN, she earned her nursing degree from Baroness Erlanger Hospital School of Nursing in Chattanooga, TN, where she graduated in 1942. She served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army Nursing Corp during World War II in Devizes, England. Additionally, she earned a Certificate of Public Health Care from the University of North Carolina in 1946. In 1981, Mrs. Gray retired as the Emergency Room Supervisor from Greenville General Hospital after thirty-four years of service.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, William Melvin Gray, Jr.; former husband, William M. Gray, Sr.; sister, Helen Dowling; brother, Earl Gideon; sisters-in-law Sue Campbell and husband Fred and Mary Martin and husband Ben. Survivors include her grandson, Chad Gray; daughter-in-law, Anne Gray, both of Powdersville, SC; step grandsons, Dale and Brian Segars of Greenville, SC; niece, Nancy Saylors and husband, Tom; sister-in-law, Marie Gideon, all of Knoxville, TN; and many close & loving friends.
A Service of Celebration in the Life of Gin Gray will be held at 4:00 PM on Monday, September 28, 2009 at New Covenant Presbyterian Church. The Reverend Dr. David Rountree will conduct the service with the Reverend Dr. Mark Burchette assisting. Interment with Military Honors provided by The Upstate Veterans Honor Guard will follow in Old Silver Brook Cemetery. Those serving as Pallbearers include: Tom Saylors, Dale Segars, Brian Segars, Matt Saylors, Rob Stivers, and Jim Abbott. Honorary Pallbearers include: Edward Chamblee, Richard Chamblee, and Bob Brunner.
The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Sunday, September 27, 2009.
