HILDA S. WARREN

APRIL 19, 1925 – SEPTEMBER 3, 2011

ANDERSON, SC -- Hilda Scott Warren died on Saturday, September 3, 2011, at Open Arms Hospice Care of Simpsonville.  She was born on April 19, 1925, in Lowndesville, South Carolina, and grew up in Iva as the sixth of seven daughters.  Her parents were Henry Johnston Scott and Allie Mae Broadwell Scott.  She was the widow of Mark E. Warren, to whom she had been married for fifty-five years.  Mrs. Warren was predeceased by her son, Russell W. Warren, president and owner of Southern Textile Works, a company begun by his father; and by four beloved sisters, Marion S. Helms, Mildred S. Cheek, Christine S. Lopez, and Pauline S. Drake.

She is survived by and was devoted to her daughter, Anne Warren Boylston of Columbia; her granddaughter, Anne-Marie Boylston of Atlanta; her daughter-in-law, Claire S. Warren of Anderson; Claire’s sister, Kimberly N. Stanley, of Atlanta; and numerous nieces and nephews.  Hilda’s surviving and much-loved sisters are Eleanor (Sue) King of Easley and Mable S. Wilkerson of Athens, Georgia.

After a brief period of employment with the Anderson Independent and Daily Mail, Hilda married at the First Baptist Church of Anderson, where she remained a member for sixty-eight years.  Most active in her home, kitchen, and church, she  loved music, gardening, and cooking exquisitely for family, friends, and the community.  The tradition of baking and sharing was continued by Anne-Marie, who would visit her grandmother, make small pound cakes, and, with Hilda by her side, deliver them to friends and neighbors.  Hilda was a member of the Rebecca Sunday School Class and her WMU Circle, both at Anderson’s First Baptist Church; the Mimosa Garden Club; and Beta Sigma Phi sorority. Her best times, however, were spent with her favorite playmate, her granddaughter, Anne-Marie, who brought her immense pleasure. Mrs. Warren will be remembered for many things, including a generous spirit and a consistently positive view of the world, despite chronic health problems.  When asked once how she managed to remain cheerful and busy after stays in the hospital, she said, “I was born with a joyful heart.”  For this and for many other remarkable attributes, she will be fondly remembered and dearly missed.

The family is most appreciative of the medical assistance from doctors, nurses, and the Browning Geriatric Counseling group of Greenville, for Mrs. Warren’s care.

Honorary pallbearers are her family deacon, Lamar Gaillard; Lawrence Webb; and the Baraca Sunday school class.

Visitation will be at The McDougald Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 7, from 1:00 to 2:00, followed by a service at 2:00 in the chapel.  Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.  Memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Anderson, 307 South Manning Street, Anderson, SC  29624.
