WINONA BURDEN NEWTON

ANDERSON – Margaret Winona Burden Newton, 89, widow of Randy Newton, a fireman for the City of Anderson, passed away on Saturday, October 3, 2009 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Royston, GA, she was the daughter of Hester Moses Burden of Hart County and Eliza Victoria Dove Burden of Dewey Rose.

While attending Wesleyan College in Central, she was the pianist for the school’s Men’s Quartet. Later, she was a bookkeeper for several local companies but will be remembered by many for her work of over 20 years as a teacher with Anderson’s Headstart Program. She was a member of Central Presbyterian Church in Anderson and a member of the Joanna Circle.

She is survived by sons Randy and John, John’s wife, Lisa Pless Newton, and their children, Jessica, Will, and Grayce; and two sisters, Ernestine Burden Westbrook and Johnnie Burden Apinis.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at New Silver Brook Cemetery conducted by Rev. Mark Watford. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Downtown Chapel, 401 North Main Street, Anderson. The family is at the home of her niece, Janice Healy, 105 Slaton Court, Anderson.
