ALFONS G. HUTTER

MAY 13, 1927 – AUGUST 24, 2009

ANDERSON, SC – Alfons G. Hutter, age 82, passed away August 24th at Anderson Place. He was born May 13, 1927, in New York City, the only child of August and Josephina Raugh Hutter. His parents had immigrated to the U.S. six years earlier, from what was then the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. From them he inherited an indomitable will to improve his lot. In 1938 there was, according to him, a brief scare when his father received a letter from Yugoslavia, offering the family farm to him. After some suspense and some hesitation, his father declined, and the Hutters were American to stay.

In the month of his eighteenth birthday he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and after being honorably discharged he put himself through college with the help of the G.I. Bill and various full-time jobs, working his way to a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute and a law degree from St. John’s University. He then got a job with the U.S. Patent Office.

At the same time he met and married Agatha Von Essen. First working in Washington, D.C., he later took jobs in private industry in upstate New York and again in New York City. He retired in 1987 from the General Electric Company after 26 years of service, and at the suggestion of friends, who knew and loved the area, moved to Anderson. He is survived by Agatha, his loving wife of 55 years, their four children: Jo Anne Yuzawa of Wyckoff, N.J., John Hutter of Austin, Tex., Peter Hutter of Baldwinsville, N.Y., and Robert Hutter of Rochester, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.

The Funeral Service will be held at 4:30 pm on Thursday, August 27th, in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home conducted by Father Hayden S. Vaverek. The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home from 5 pm until 7pm on Wednesday, August 26th.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorials be made to the Alzheimer Association SC-Anderson Chapter - 521 North McDuffie Street, Anderson, SC 29621. A message of condolence may be sent by visiting www.mcdougaldfuneralhome.com.
