ANDERSON, SC – The Reverend Father Thaddeus Michael Sapio, O.F.M., died peacefully at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson, SC, on Thursday, September 17, 2009, at the age of 71.
Born Raymond Nicholas Sapio in Haddonfield, NJ, on August 7, 1938, he was the only child of the late Nicholas Sapio and Helen Hunt Sapio. He received the name Thaddeus Michael when he was received into the Order of Friars Minor (the Franciscans) in 1958. Father Thaddeus pronounced first vows in 1959 and was ordained Priest.
Father Thaddeus was educated at Christ the King in Haddonfield, NJ, where he first met the Franciscans. From there he went to St. Joseph’s Seminary in Callicoon, NY, where he formerly started his life with the friars. Father Thaddeus studied Philosophy in Rye Beach, NH, and studied Theology in Washington, DC. He was ordained at Priest at Mt. St. Sepulchre in Washington, DC, on March 13, 1965. During his many years of service to God’s people, his assignments included serving the parishes in Beach Haven, NJ, San Antonio, TX, Rye Beach, NH, Camden, NJ, Yulan, NY, Bronx, NY, and lastly Anderson, SC.
Father Thaddeus is survived by his 366 brothers in the province; his church family at St. Mary of the Angels Catholic Church; his dog, “Jumper”; and a myriad of others who know him and love him dearly.
Father Thaddeus will lie in state at St. Mary of the Angels Catholic Church, 1821 White Street, from 1:30 pm until 6:00 pm on Sunday, September 20, 2009. A prayer service will be held be held at the Church from 7:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Sunday, September 20, 2009. The Funeral Mass will be held at 10 am on Monday, September 21, 2009, at St. Mary of the Angels Catholic Church. Further services with burial will be held in Patterson, NJ. It is suggested that memorials gifts be given to the Building Fund of St. Mary of the Angels Catholic Church, 1821 White Street, Anderson, SC 29621.
