PRESTON B. HOLTZENDORFF, IV
JANUARY 10, 1943 – NOVEMBER 29, 2009
ANDERSON, SC – Preston “Pebby” B. Holtzendorff, IV, known to many as the owner of the Book Exchange in Anderson, located off of Clemson Highway, lost his courageous battle with cancer on the morning of November 29, 2009, at the Rainey Hospice House.
Born in Ft. Jackson, SC, on January 10, 1943, he was the son of the late Mary L. Goolsby and Preston B. Holtzendorff, III. Mr. Holtzendorff graduated from D.W. Daniel High School in Central, SC, and Erskine College in Due West, SC. Previously of Jacksonville, FL, and St. Augustine, FL, he was the owner of two bookstores in St. Augustine and worked with the State of Florida’s Juvenile Program for over fourteen years. He returned to Anderson within the previous ten years in order to operate the Book Exchange.
Survivors include two children: a son, Preston B. Holtzendorff, V, of Spartanburg, SC; a son, Erik S. Holtzendorff and wife, Kelly of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren: Michael Holtzendorff and Laura Holtzendorff, both of Jacksonville, FL; stepmother, Rosemary Holtzendorff of Easley; half sister, Anica Holtzendorff Owen and husband, David of Easley; half brother, Kevin B. Holtzendorff of Duncan; and loving companion, Cynthia Lott Brown.
In addition to his parents, his stepfather, Erville S. Goolsby, also preceded him in death.
The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home, Anderson, from 6pm until 8pm on Friday, December 4, 2009. A Graveside Service will be at 2pm on Saturday, December 5, 2009, at the New Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery, located on Hwy 25, near Travelers Rest, SC. The Reverend Dr. Jack Couch will conduct the service. The funeral procession to the cemetery will depart The McDougald Funeral Home at 1pm Saturday – for those inclined to follow.
The Holtzendorff family would like to thank all of the customers of the Book Exchange for over thirty-four years of business – also welcoming them to continue their patronage.
